So Noted Singers & Forte Plus

me, my dad and dementia #81: interesting weekend and interesting chat…

Dad was convinced just this past Wed, that he should stop singing in the choirs next year. And so while we drove to Forte Plus, we chatted. We talked about the benefits of singing, of working on the music and of being with others. But do those benefits outweigh the frustration for him of forgetting everything between rehearsals?

He also did not realize that he serves as an inspiration for many people and here’s the topper….myself included. He had no idea. Long story short…. He’s reconsidering his “must sing everything perfectly” approach! Amazing.

He did well this past weekend. He even looked up a few times in each show…which I love. And he had some real energy prior to each show. He made witty and pithy comments. He visited happily with his brother who brings joyful energy to everything he does and I believe that helps Dad. The two of them went for a walk one day and Dad decided not to use his walker….and he did well without it! um….what?!?!

Of course, when we went for a walk after Sunday brunch in WEM, Dad got tired very quickly….we had forgotten to bring his walker. Slow walking and much sitting was required. But a few days later, he decided to skip his walker again and go for a walk in our neighborhood. On purpose!! And to see how fast he could go! Yikes! What do I even say to that? He was thrilled that he did it. I was not. What if he falls? What if he gets too tired to return? But how do I take his sense of accomplishment away? I can’t. So I just have to rely on dementia now to allow him to forget this little experience and go back to taking his walker with him as usual. Come on dementia! Yup, can’t believe I need dementia to help me out there….

OH OH and YAY YAY and a little Hallelujah – we just got more hours added for our home care worker! Amazing!
