I don’t think he can make coffee or his steel cut oats anymore in the mornings. His mornings are when he is most confused. We’ve switched to instant coffee but he really wanted to put the grounds straight into the kettle so there’s that….
But on the flip side, we were reminiscing about a trip we made to Ontario a few summers ago in order to visit some dear friends there. Dad not only remembered everything but offered up details of his own….and they were correct! Um….how?
It looks like AHS would have to come assess him again and given that he just told a flight attendant he “could run if necessary with no problem” when asked about his mobility….I think we may have a problem with another assessment. Unfortunately, AHS does not understand dementia at all so they’re just looking for the basics and not the individual.
In other words, these are the questions they are interested in answering…-has his mobility changed?
-can he still feed himself?
-does he need help in the bathroom?
-can he still feed himself?
-does he need help in the bathroom?
So I went with…..ready?…..we believe he could burn down the house if left unsupervised with this stove top in the mornings. (not a lie by the way) That got a quick and positive response! No, they won’t reassess him but yes, they will try for more helper hours and yes, they are now open to discussing putting him on the wait list. They’ve asked for my Enduring Power Of Attorney so I’ve scanned and sent it. That’s in case he says no and he will say no….there’s no doubt in my mind. But that’s a problem for another day!
In the meantime, he’s enjoying soccer!
