Too busy? Just busy enough? Not nearly busy? I would boldly suggest that being busy is a very good thing. But how do we find balance and fulfillment within the rich tapestry of our lives? But while I say that, we have to be careful to not overload those adrenals and add stress to our lives. Perhaps, we should be considering all these “extra” activities as part of our “real” lives. In fact, maybe these extra activities are integral.
I believe that our participation in the arts, even when it gets ultra busy and crazy, still teaches us, our families, our friends and our larger communities incredibly valuable lessons that we might not otherwise learn or accept.
Children learn that their parents have other interests that serve to make them into well rounded humans who are therefore better parents.
Parents learn that being away from their children might allow their children to see them as humans instead of just parents and might give everyone some freedom and breathing space to further explore who we really are.
Friends learn that supporting one another is just as much about coming out to events and going out for lunch as it is allowing for just a phone call or email once in a while when life does get busier.
Our community learns that what we do together sustains everything from volunteerism, fundraising for others, supporting local businesses and simply seeing all people as similar while honoring differences.
We all discover more about ourselves and each other as we participate in these “busy” activities that enrich our lives. No, let’s not refer to what we do in that way anymore. Let’s call it what it really is. An essential part of our real lives and who we are. These busy moments pass by quickly in the grand scheme of things so my final suggestion is that we embrace them, we recognize them as busy times and we actually cherish them.
