me, my dad and dementia #16 – anti-depressants, trump, and an island

Now that’s a mouthful!

Dad confessed to having “blue” moments throughout his life and even wondered where that might have come from….so…yeah I shall refer you back to witnessing war atrocities and losing his mother at a young age.

I remembered my daughter suggesting anti-depressants when my Dad was at his worst a few weeks ago and I immediately suggested the idea to him. He was completely sold and totally “in” to try it.
So the very next day we happily went to see his GP. We’ve known him for years and he has let me come into the exam room for many years now. Of course I did manage to miss the turn along the way…I blame Dad since we were merrily chatting about all kinds of things….HAH….but we made it with 2 minutes to spare.

The GP suggested a tiny dose of anti-depressant that also contains a tiny bit of a sleep aide. Brilliant! I have read that anti-depressants do not do much for dementia patients and if they do, the effects don’t last long but a sleep aide combined with it might in fact be really helpful.

He’s had really decent nights since the first night we gave it to him (we literally cut the pills in half as per the GP) but he is now a bit “dopey” in the mornings for lack of a better word. I wish I could get more water in him which I believe would help to counteract this but it’s really hard to convince him that 2 tiny little sips of water every day is simply not enough. I refer you back to the war again…. My Dad doesn’t even really get hungry….never mind thirsty.

Right now, he is listening to the classical channel on his TV while the rest of Canada worries about the tariffs imposed upon us by “the dummy” as my Dad refers to Trump. And he has a new puzzle upon his table. No, not “the dummy”! Dad’s not sure Trump could do a puzzle, even one for a kiddo. HAH

With this cold snap, Dad does 100 to 200 “pedals” a day on his pedaller and I encourage him to work with his weights. But the real mood lifter is this….we are counting down the “sleeps” until we head to Victoria. My Dad calls it “that magical island” and loves both the sea and the ancient forests. Who doesn’t? We’re counting too!

Now THAT’S an anti-depressant for us all!!
