#20 – a swollen and bruised ankle
AAGH! We have no idea how it happened but I’m gonna guess sometime on Wednesday since he only showed it to us on Thursday.
It had many wild colors to start and those have dissipated a fair bit. The swelling has gone down but it is not totally gone. And when we push a finger in, the dent remains a little so yup, edema is still there. It hurts him above the bruise so that doesn’t make sense but there you have it.
We go over to “his side” several times a day now to make sure he remembers to elevate his leg, we put an icy cold “wrap” on it and we wrap a compression bandage around it gently. Of course, Dad discovered that the icy cold wrap could be put in the microwave so when his foot got too cold, he remedied that by heating up the wrap. Cute but counter productive!
I’m now doing his dishes daily which comes as a surprise to Dad each and every time. “Oh you don’t have to do that Criselda” is his regular line but my answer is always “oh yes, I do”. I don’t want him standing at his sink.
But here’s the big question….where are my Dad’s “newer” runners? How do shoes just totally disappear? We’ve looked in all kinds of untoward and unexpected places but nope. And yes, Dad now puts things into cupboards and closets and drawers that were never meant to go into those places. ’tis life – doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.
The other day, my husband went over to make his lunch for him so he didn’t have to get up and move around a lot. About 20 minutes later, we went over to turn on his TV for him and he was eating a second sandwich since he had forgotten that he already had first lunch. Ah well, more nutrition!
My husband has been amazing and looks after my Dad in really thoughtful and nice ways. I am continually impressed and grateful.
A friend just gave us some borscht and perogies – my Dad’s face lit up when we showed him! I am again impressed and grateful.
And this week, we meet with some lovely folks who are arranging to have a volunteer come in and simply visit with my Dad once a week. Again and worth repeating myself, impressed and grateful.
So many good things means I can easily and happily close my eyes to some of the harder things….but where are those running shoes?!?!?
