So Noted Singers & Forte Plus

me, my dad and dementia #58: another show, another speed bump

Forte Plus and Seniors Acting Out Together did two of their shows just last week. We started with an afternoon rehearsal followed by an evening performance and another evening performance the very next night. Dad was slightly surprised each time. Tiny speed bump…. “Oh, are we doing another show?” Plus, he really wanted to bring both of his binders (for So Noted as well) just in case. cute.

He read well! He sang well! He enjoyed it! And he somewhat remembers it!! But yup, he’ll be surprised on Sunday when we head out to do this show one more time.

On the flip side, he was unhappy with me on Monday night. Too many details, he said. He felt like he just couldn’t do it and wanted to drop out immediately. I wonder why he goes straight to that place. Something about dementia doesn’t let him “see past” or beyond anymore. And that’s a speed bump. But by Tuesday, he was feeling much better about it all!

Then on Wednesday, we had our last afternoon choir rehearsal and I realized that there is really no chance for him when it comes to repeats. He simply cannot “go back”. He understands the signs and the road map but he cannot execute it.

On the drive home after the rehearsal, he said….”I need to practise some of those pieces Criselda. They’re brand new to me.” Ah well. Another little speed bump I figure, since he’s still enjoying it.

We did manage to mutually commiserate and complain a lot about all the speed bumps they’ve put into our neighborhood (SO many)….for “traffic calming” apparently….but my Dad and I were both feeling more like “traffic angering” by these measures. HAH!
